Elma Theodore Hart
Elma Theodore Hart was born on 2 March 1883 in Wayne City, Wayne County, Illinois.^1,2,3 He was the son of Mahlon Hart and Mary Samantha Gray.^4,1 Elma Theodore Hart married Bertha Underwood before November 1923. Elma Theodore Hart married Bertha Irene Wilson, daughter of Andrew Jackson Wilson and Rebecca Jane Smith, on 25 November 1923 in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.⁵ Elma Theodore Hart died on 17 April 1946 in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana, at age 63.^6,7,8

He was buried on 21 April 1946 in Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.^9,10

(an unknown value). Elma was his name on his birth certificate. Sometime later in life he must have changed it to Elmer, since all of his adult records state this name.^1,6,10

He appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of Mahlon Hart and Mary Samantha Gray in Wayne City, Wayne County, Illinois,

; Mary is shown to have had a total of ten children, six of them were living at home in 1900. The other four may have died in their infancy. The children of the household in 1900 were Charles, Elmer, Maude, Ola, Tessie, and Ernest. Maude, Ola, and Tessie were attending school. All of the children were born in Illinois. They had a white servant named Jennie Butter (age 39) living with them, and also two boarders F. G. Thompson, a widower (age 34), and Bessie M. Thompson (age 5). Everyone in the family could read and write except for Mahlon's wife, Mary, and the servant, Jennie. Both Mahlon and his son, Charles, were working on the railroad as laborers. F. G. was also working on the railroad as a laborer. Mahlon was renting the home and the home was not on a farm.⁴

Elma worked on L & N Railroad for 35 years and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. He was a Brakeman when he worked for the railroad..^9,11

He lived in 1928 in Evansville (Howell), Vanderburgh County, Indiana.¹² Elma and Bertha appeared on the census of 1930 in Pigeon Township, Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.¹³ His Social Security Number was 704-10-4650 and his occupation at the time was a Brakeman with the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company (L & N).. This was as of on 8 June 1937 and his address was listed at this time in 2819 Broadway, Evansville, Indiana.¹⁴ In 1946 he lived 1705 Delmar Avenue, Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.¹⁵

Elma died of auriscular fibrillation. He was diagnosed with hypertension..⁶

Bertha Irene Wilson was born on 31 December 1897 in Mortons Gap, Hopkins County, Kentucky.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Wilson and Rebecca Jane Smith.^1,3 Bertha Irene Wilson married Elma Theodore Hart, son of Mahlon Hart and Mary Samantha Gray, on 25 November 1923 in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.⁴ Bertha Irene Wilson married Walter Duncan after 1946. Bertha Irene Wilson died on 3 November 1966 in Pine Haven Nursing Home, Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana, at age 68.^5,2

She was buried after 3 November 1966 in Oakwood Cemetery, Earlington, Hopkins County, Kentucky.⁵

Her married name was Hart. Her Social Security Number was 311-12-0455. She appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of Andrew Jackson Wilson and Rebecca Jane Smith in Earlington District, Hopkins County, Kentucky,

She helped in the building of ships during World War II. As of after 1943,her married name was Duncan. (an unknown value).

She suffered from diabetes in her adult life and she had a stroke circa 1958. The stroke left her bedridden for the remainder of her life. She resided in at the Pine Haven nursing home in Evansville, Indiana from circa 1960 until her death.⁸ Bertha died of Basiliar Artery Thrombosis - Atherosclerosis.

I do not remember any stories about why our ancestors came to America. My mother enjoyed reading books. She attended school for 12 years and worked as a telephone operator in Earlington, Kentucky before she got married. After she got married, they moved to Portland, Oregon where she worked as a secretary for the U.S. Government Bureau of Land Management. She was generally in excellent health most of her life and she had a good sense of humor. She was raised in the Christian faith. She was 4 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 70 lbs. Victor, my father, attended school for 8 years and was a civil engineer and the President of a Savings and Loan Company in Vancouver, Washington.³
