All of the children were born in Illinois. They had a white servant named Jennie Butter (age 39) living with them, and also two boarders F. G. Thompson, a widower (age 34), and Bessie M. Thompson (age 5). Everyone in the family could read and write except for Mahlon's wife, Mary, and the servant, Jennie. Both Mahlon and his son, Charles, were working on the railroad as laborers. F. G. was also working on the railroad as a laborer. Mahlon was renting the home and the home was not on a farm.8
