John Sprinkle Jr. was born on 22 January 1773 in York County, Pennsylvania.
He was the son of Michael Sprenkle Sr. and Marie "Elizabeth" Weigel.
John Sprinkle Jr. was christened on 25 April 1773.
He married Susannah Lawrence, daughter of Adam Lawrence and Susannah (?), circa 1797 in Henderson, Kentucky.
John Sprinkle Jr. died in July 1822 in Warrick County, Indiana, at age 49. Per the book, 'A Bicentennial Look at Newburgh, Indiana', "Records show that on August 5, 1822 six men were bound for $500 each to make an inventory of the personal property of John Sprinkle. The men assigned to do this were Jesse Gay, William Sprinkle, Alva Pasco, Joseph DeEorest, Daniel Frame and James C. Graham. Therfore, evidence points to the fact, that John Sprinkle, the founder of Newurgh, died the latter part of July in 1822."1 Per the book, 'A Bicentennial Look at Newburgh, Indiana', "John and Susannah were both buried in the Sprinkle burying plot on Jennings Street just east of their home. Old timers of the Newburgh area say they can remember old footstones in this cemetery. There is no record of burials there. Many years ago, the graves, or what was left of them, were removed to the Casey or Sharon cemetery north of Newburgh."2 John appeared on the census of 1799 in Henderson County, Kentucky.3 Also per the book, 'A Bicentennial Look at Newburgh, Indiana', "Tradition has said, and some residents of Newburgh still believe that John Sprinkle was a poor man and that he died penniless. This is not true. It is true that John Sprinkle died intestate for no will belonging to him can be found in Warrick County. In the early days when someone died intestate an administrator was appointed by the court to settle the estate of the deceased. In October 1822, Jesse Gay was appointed administrator of the estate of John Sprinkle. Gay got busy and began collecting debts that were owed to Sprinkle. The entire estate and partition of real estate was not settled completely until some 32 years later, in 1854." "In August 1822, just following the death of Sprinkle, Warrick County records contain the following report: August the 15th, 1822, We the under signed do certify that the within is a true appraisal of the personal property of John Sprinkle, dec. that was shone to us by Susanna Sprinkle widow of sd. decd. Sprinkle agreeable to the best of our shill and judgment under oath. Signed Wilson Bullett and Jacob Keele." "In 1851 the estate settlement of John Sprinkle was still pending. In August of that year, three men, Chester Elliott, George Hathaway, and Samuel Summers, wer appointed by the Warrick County Court to make a partition of the land which belonged to John Sprinkle at the time of his death. They surveyed this land and divided it into 17 parts. Chester Elliott was paid $8.75 for his services and Hathaway and Summers wer paid $6.00 each."2 Click links below to view supporting documents, photos, etc. for John Sprinkle Jr.. Census. |
