One of the jobs was with an Insurance Agency in Chicago.10 I interviewed Sue Jones from Equality, Illinois in June 2002. She told me she knew Vera quite well but she did not remember Leo due to him probably living in Chicago at the time. Sue said Vera thought the world of Leo and the gossip of the town was that when Leo died she would soon follow. Fortunately, this was not the case. Vera lived for an additonal four years after her sons death.11 Click links below to view supporting documents, photos, etc. for Leo Kenneth Moore. Photos; Birth; Death; Misc.; |

Mora M. Moore died on 9 June 1988 in Illinois, at age 98.1,4 He was buried in Leamington Cemetery, Gallatin County, Illinois, .8 His Social Security Number was 360-16-6109 issued before 1951.9 He, age 11, appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of John Logan Moore and Caroline Cheek in Eagle Creek Township, Gallatin County, Illinois; In the 1900 census John Logan age 34, and Caroline, age 33, were taking care of their farm they owned free and clear of any mortgage. Their sons Mora, age 11, Elmer, age 10, and Homer, age 7, could all read and write. Howard was just one year old.2 The following six paragraphs were copied from an article titled 'Goolsby School' from a library book at Willard Library, Vanderburgh County, Indiana: Goolsby School is located in the very southwest corner of Gallatin County in Eagle Creek Township. The School was named for early settlers, the Goolsby family. The first school was a log structure. John Logan Moore opend a grocery store in this pioneer building when a new white frame school was constructed. I drove past the former school this summer and it is in good shape because Mary Casey remodeled the place with a porch and other additions to make it an attractive home. Flowers nod to passersby and curtains flutter at the windows to belie the fact that this building once heard calls to order with a bell and saw teachers inspire youngsters to listen and learn. Listen and learn they did. The storekeeper's oldest son, Mora Moore, started teaching when only seventeen and taught in many of the neighboring schools as well as in the Equality School to rack up fifty years of teaching. This grand, older teacher lived to be 99 years old. John Logan Moore had five sones. The youngest, Norman, graduated from Equality High, passed the teachers exam that summer and taught his first year of school at Dorsey in 1929. Norman then attended college and became the principal of Carbondale Junior High and served in that capacity for more than twenty years. He was also Assistant Superintendent of Instruction in Carbondale, then worked in the State Department of Education to make a total of forty years in education. I interviewed Norman by telephone to get his opinion of one room schools because he evaluated curriculum for the State Department for five and on-half years. His response was, "one room schools were good. The emphasized the basics of reading, spelling and math every day. Students listened to the higher grades and learned from them as well as from the teacher." Norman is enjoying retirement in Carbondale and Florida. It is noteworthy that Mora Moore taught three generations of Colberts, beginning wiht Jesse James Colbert who was about the same age as the teacher. Mouch of the land surrounding Gollsby School on the notrhern half was settled by the Colbert family. The first James Colbert came from Alabama to Eagle Creek in the early 1800's. His son, James T. (Whiskers) Colbert worked in the Illinois Furnace Works in the winter, farmed in the summer and became a large landowner of 800 acres. One of his children was Jesse James Colbert, whose son, Ralph Colbert, was a popular former Gallatin County Clerk. Ralph and his wife, Rosetta Martin, had four children. It is no surprise that they also had Mora Moore for their teacher at Equality High. Families who sent children to Goolsby were Casey, Tanner, Goodson, Vinyard, Martin, Banks, Hurley, Scroggins, Suits, Frohock, Williams, Partain, Brinkley, Milligan, Baldwin, Emery, Belt, Brooks, Littrell and Tucker. Others were Flanders, Black and Griffin. Margaret Colbert Moore, a former student, has retired and returned to Equality with her husband, Bill Moore. Margaret remembered her teachers, Mora Moore, Ile Brinkley, Joe Scroggins and Virginia Baker. There were others, Albert Barnett, Harrison Banks and Bernard Elliot. I sat on Margaret's and Bill's porch and learned about Goolsby while a tiny ...10 An excerpt from a book titled 'Cemeteries of Gallatin County reads, "Mr. Mora Moore taught the last rural school in the county, Kedron Grade School with pupils from 3 or 4 former adjoining district schools. He began his teaching career in 1908, at age 17, at Central school which was on the Eagle Creek and Saline County line. In 1910 he was at the old hewed log school called Goolsby. When replaced, his father John L. ran a store in this old building in Section 29 in T10 R8. After the New Haven grade school closed last year, there were only three schools left in the county. They are all grade 1 through 12 and located in Shawneetown, Equality and Ridgway. There are not over 4 or 5 active rural churches left."11 The following eleven paragraphs are from another article titled 'Central School': "This one room school stands on the Gallatin-Saline County Line Road. It was built in the earyly 1900's and can be seen today standing erect behind tall shrubs. Central seemed to be a good name for the school because it was half-way betewwn Kedron and Goolsby, then to the west at least three miles or more. The hills around the school were not easy to climb, especially in cold weather, by foot. The families who were sending children to Central until it closed in 1950 were: Moore, Patton, Booten, Healy, Baldwin, Tartlton, Colbert, Stilley, Hull, Osborne, Partain, Williams, McDaniel, Carnett, Edwards, Elliott, Followell, Oglesby, Baldwin, Hargrove, Hicks, Calhoun, Emery, Powell and others. Theachers remembered were Mora Moore, J. Hass, Joe Scroggins, Ezra Black, Erna Harbison, Daisy Harbison, Loeva Carnett, Herman Wiedemann, I. M. Brinkley and Mary Jo Martin. One former student, Bill Moore, who has returned to Equality to retire, recalled the "very good teaching" received at Central. "We were taught to memorize classical poetry, important documents and performances in plays." Moore said, "One day in Equality High School English, our teacher asked if anyone knew the Gettysburg Address. I was the only volunteer to recit it." He continued, "the most fun were geograpy matches at Central. After dividing up sides, we challenged the opponents to name a country after our side had named for example, Albania. They had to name a country, without using a map, either starting with an "a" or with the ending letter of the country we named. We studied our maps beforehand." When asked if there had been any playground equipment, Bill answered, "Sure thing. We had a merry-go-round and a slide, but we boys liked to walk up and down those hills on homemade stilts. We'd drive pretend cars around the playground, using a branch from a tree. We had throttles, gear shifts, the works." Lorene Patton Shewmaker, another former Central student who later taught school for 35 years, remembered, "I was at Central during the Great Depression. The girls wore print dresses made at home and the boys wore bib overalls. No matter how cold the weather, girls never wore pants to school. We wore overshoes to wade the muddy roads. We carried our lunches in tin buckets and buried our milk in glass jars in the snow. When there was snow, we made snow 'ice cream.' On cold mornings, we sat around the stove for two or more hours. At recesses we loved to play long town ball with a home-made bat and ball. The older boys would go into the woods and cut grapvines which we used for jumping ropes." Dala Jo McDaniel-Cornett of Chesterfield, Missouri, sent the picture of students attending Central School during the 1938-1939 school year. Dala Jo also wrote, "Uncle Archie McDaniel attended Central when only four years old and then graduated from Equality High School at the age of 15." Since the school sat on the county line road, several students attended from Jones and Colbert Schools in Saline County. Because of this, Central was visited by Gallatin county Superintendent of Schools, Horace Brown, and by Saline County Superintendent, Miss Wilson. Records were kept of some of the awards given to students in the late 1940's and up to 1950 when the school was consolidated. Spelling awards were won by Lola Stilley, Mary Moore, Leon Stilley, Barbara Stilley, Shelby Tarlton and Don Elliott. When I called at Lorene Patton Shewmaker's home in Harrisburg, I learned of her father's, Clayborn Patton, narrow escape when only three months old. Loren's grandparents, Allen and Sarah Mund Patton, were moving to a new place. Allen got down from the wagon to open a gate. Sarah held Clayborn while driving the wagon loaded with furniture through the gate. A bedstead hooked on the gatepost. Sarah was thrown out of the wagon. She landed on a rock and was killed while still holding the baby safe in her arms. Grandfather Allen Patton raised his son, Clayborn, who grew up and attended Central School. He met and later married a classmate, Rosetta Tarlton. Clayborn and Rosie had two daughters, Lorene and Lois, who also went Central School. I congratulated Lorene for making it into the world only by a dying mother hanging on to her baby, Clayborn, to save him. The Pattons lived near the Garden of the God's before there were good roads. Some people stopped at their house one day and asked for directions to the Garden of the Gods. Clayborn's humorous answer was, "I've lived here all my life and if God's got a garden in this country, I don't know about it." After joking more with the strangers, Clayborn proceeded to give the directions to the location, which was only a few miles south. Today the roads are improved and it is easy to see the many scenic and historic places in the Shawnee National Forest. But, the Garden of the God's is still likely the most spectacular and the most popular. Mari Lou Moore Smith wrote this note from Yorktown, Virginia. "Mrs. McMurtry advanced me from the seventh grade to Equality High School and I received a diploma from Horace Brown, Superintendent of Schools. My request for advancement was because Central School was closing that year. My report card shows May 3, 1952, as the last day of school for Central.: The yellow buses bring the students from that former district to Gallatin County Unit #7, where a tree grows with a tag for Central School. Some of the tags have blown away and need to be replaced by wooden ones." Mora M. Moore appeared on the census of 1910 in the household of John Logan Moore and Caroline Cheek in Eagle Creek Township, Gallatin County, Illinois, ; In the Census of 1910 John is age 44 and Caroline is age 33. They had their sons Mora, William Elmer, Homer, Howard, and Norman living with them. Mora, age 21, was a starting his long career as a teacher in a public school. William Elmer, age 19, and Homer, age 17, were working on the family farm. Howard, age 11, was attending school and Norman was just 1 year old.6 In the 1920 census Mora and Ethel are living at Ethel's Father's home with their son Russel.12 As of circa 1987, Mora and Ethel lived on the original acreage purchased by his grandfather Russel Moore. However, Mora did not inherit his grandfather's land, but purchased it from a loan company. Two previous owners, Henry Koster (his Father-in-Law) and Hardy Barnett, had the land before Mora acquired it.7,13 Click links below to view supporting documents, photos, etc. for Mora M. Moore.
