Elizabeth "Polly" Sprinkle married John V. Darby, son of John Darby and Emily Hazen, on 5 May 1823 in Warrick County, Indiana.2
Elizabeth "Polly" Sprinkle died before 1851. As of 29 May 1822,her married name was Dellen. As of 5 May 1823,her married name was Darby. The following paragraphs are from the book titled 'A bicentennial look at Newburgh, Indiana', "In the year 1818 John Sprinkle obtained title to 205 acres of land in Warrick County, Indiana. By August 1 of the same year he had surveyed and laid out 102 lots. However the Sprinkle home was not in this section. John V. Darby married John Sprinkle's daughter, Elizabeth, and in 1824 he purchased lot #84 from his father-in-law for #35. This small purchase price was probably due to the fact that six years later the town's population was only 37. Now came the building of the Darby home. It was erected near the southeastern corner of the lot and was "L" shaped. As Mr. Darby was a gunsmith and a Justice of the Peace, a building for those operations was needed and one was erected at the corner where the streets intersected. In 1884 a terrible windstorm struck Newburgh while the Ohio River was at flood stage. The waves washed away the street in front of the house and several feet of the lot's frontage. Afterward, when a retaining wall was erected the original front property line was ignored and the wall was placed where the cave-in had occurred. Two children were born to John and Elizabeth Darby - John H. and Louisiana. Louisiana married W. P. Norwood, steamboat captain and prominent in the form of Norwood and Taylor, wharf boat operators at Newburgh. The house now known as the "Norwood House" was built for Captain and Mrs. Norwood and she remained there the remainder of her lifetime. At the the death of her father, she inherited the lot and all its improvements. About 20 years after her father's death, his old home and shop were removed from the lot, allowing them a better view of the river. At Mrs. Norwood's death, her four children inherited the property and in 1913 Harry A. Darby, a great grandson of John Sprinkle purchased it from her heirs. Five years later he sold it, ending an ownership that had endured for 100 years either of John Sprinkle or his descendents. It again became Mr. Darby's property in 1928 and he kept it for 18 years. Mr. and Mrs. James E. Cox lived there over 25 years and the present owners are Robert M. Anderson."3 |
