Russel Moore was born circa 1817 in Illinois.1,2,3,4 He married Nancy Seets, daughter of Miles (?) Seets and (?) (?), on 13 October 1841 in Gallatin County, Illinois; The marriage license states, "Moore to Seat, State of Illinois, Gallatin County - I do certify that I have joined in the Holy Estate of matrimony Russel Moore and Nancy Seat on the 13th day of October AD 1841, signed Aaron 'Sutton, MS."5,6 Russel Moore died between 6 July 1880 and 1895 in Gallatin County(?), Illinois.7

Per text written by Norman E. Moore found in the book, Gallatin County, Illinois - History and Families 1812 to 1988, "Richard Moore, who came with Pilgrims to the New World in 1620 on the Mayflower, may have been a member of this family. A number of different spellings of the Moore name are to be noted in Old English records. It is known that Richard Moore was one of the fifty Mayflower passengers from whom descent might be established. There is no question the Moore family of Eagle Creek Township, as well as Moore families elsewhere, are of Scotch-Irish origin, despite the change of spellings.7

He lived sometime prior to circa 1841 in Tennessee; Norman E. Moore also wrote, "Among the settlers coming into Southern Illinois from Tennessee during the middle of the 19th century was one Russel Moore, about 1855". The actual date is on or before 1841 because Russel married Nancy Seat in 1841 in Gallatin County, Illinois. Russel is also found on the 1850 census of Gallatin County. I believe Norman thought is was circa 1855 because this is the date found on a land purchase document that Russel signed in 1855.7,8,1

Russel was found spelled Rufsel, Rufsell, or Russell. In later years most of the references are Russel. The spelling Rufsel and Rufsell was a common spelling in Wales in the 1800's. Russel may have changed his name from Rufsell to Russel later in life. The spelling Rufsell was found on his land grant dated 1854.9,10,11,12,13,14

Russel and Nancy appeared on the census of 1850 in Eagle Precinct, Gallatin County, Illinois. Russel was a laborer and Nancy kept house. Neither Russel nor Nancy could read or write. Enumerated in this household were their childern Elizabeth, William, and Harrison. The household also included Hardy Seat who was probably a relation to Nancy.15

On 21 September 1854 Russel (Rufsell) purchased 120 acres in Township 10S, Section 21, Gallatin County, Illinois. The price paid per acre was 13 cents which totaled a whooping five dollars for the entire 120 acres!!16,17,18

Russel and Nancy appeared on the census of 1860 in Township 10, Range 8, Gallatin County, Illinois,

; Russel was now a farmer and Nancy kept house. They had four more children since the 1850 census, Catherine, Hannah, Caroline, and Andrew J. Their land was valued at $1000 and their personal property was valued at $500.19 Russel and Nancy appeared on the census of 1870 in Gallatin County. In the 1870 census, Russel and Nancy had seven of their eight children living with them. Elizabeth, their oldest daughter, had moved away. Their youngest and last child, John, was 6 years old. Russel was still farming.20

On 14 March 1878 Russel sold the 120 acres he owned in Gallatin County to Henry Koster for the sum of $800.7 After the sale of the land Russel and his wife, went to Texas for a while, but didn't remain there very long. They returned to Southern Illinois.7 In the Goolsby School District, Hickory Creek, Gallatin County, between 14 March 1878 and 6 July 1880, Russel and Nancy purchased an 80 acre tract of land.7

Russel and Nancy appeared on the census of 1880 in Eagle Creek Precinct, Gallatin County, Illinois; Russel was a farmer and Nancy kept house. Elizabeth, William, Harrison, and Catherine are gone from the household. Catherine, their daughter, married Sneed Jackson and they were living in this household along with their three children. It appears all of the sons went to school for many years while the daughters went for shorter periods of time, or little at all. Andrew J. and John are shown as farm laborers and were probably helping out on the family farm.
